Python Job: Research Scholarship – BI-Nº2022-00165

There is an open call for two (2) Research Scholarships (“Bolsa de Investigação”) at Instituto de Telecomunicações, in the scope of the Project SmartGlow with No. 069733 (POCI-01-0247-FEDER-069733). This project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), through the Competitiveness and Internationalization Operational Programme (COMPETE 2020) of the Portugal 2020 framework.

Admission Requirements:
Research grants are intended:

for students enrolled in a degree-conferring course to carry out R&D activities with the aim to consolidate their scientific training through the development of research work leading to the attainment of the respective academic degree or completion of the course (integrated or not in R&D projects).

for students enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree but which are integrated in an educational project of a higher education institution and are developed in association or cooperation with one or several R&D units.

Candidates must be enrolled in a master's, integrated master's, or doctoral program in the areas of Physics or Astronomy, Physical Engineering, Electrotechnical Engineering, Informatics or similar. *Python, C/C++, JavaScript, CSS; priority to knowledge of Python or C *experience in photonics and substrates for sensors *analysis of scientific literature on astronomical data processing or space debris *Knowledge of astronomical source extraction processing software and large-field image calibration based on Sextractor or PSFEx. *experience or publications in the field of space debris monitoring. Strong priority will be given to evidence showing experience or participation in astronomical processing pipelines or space debris workflows.
Note: Preference will be given to candidates with a master's degree and candidates with a bachelor's degree will only be hired if there aren´t applications by masters or if with the master candidates applying do not come from the intended training area and/or do not have the required experience.

Work Objectives:
API construction for all-sky camera integration in SmartGlow or PASO remote control system. Study of applicability to sky surveillance; contribution to the development of meteoroid and sun monitoring capacity. Development of an image processing pipeline using software to operate CCD sensors in deep space survey telescopes to detect transient sources (ESO, BlackGEM, MeerLICHT). Implementation of astronomical data processing pipelines.

Applicable legislation:
A fellowship will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT, “Regulation of Instituto de Telecomunicações’ fellowships” and “Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação”, according to Law no. 123/2019, dated August 28 (Status of Scientific Research Fellow), in its actual redaction, and also by Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P. Fellowship Regulation of Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia. Place of work:
The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações at University of Aveiro, under the supervision of Dr. Domingos da Silva Barbosa.

Duration:
7 months, with the possibility of renewal. Start date: December 2022 or soon thereafter.

Monthly salary:
875.98€ or 1144.64€ according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). The payment will be made by bank transfer.

Each criteria, and the final classification F will be evaluated in a scale (0-20). The candidates will be ordered according to:
F = C1 x 80% + C2 x 20%
In case of a tie, the tied candidates will be ordered according to C1, then C2...
The Jury has the right to not admit any of the candidates that applied for this position whenever they consider that no candidate meets the minimum requirements for the position.
