About the role

All progress begins with pioneers. At Rio Tinto, it begins with you.

An exciting new opportunity now exists for a Geophysicist / Petrophysicist to join our Iron Ore - Resource Development team in Perth. Focussed on realising and adding value to current and future projects, this key technical role will ensure that downhole geophysical logging, surface geophysical surveys and associated activities are planned and executed safely, with results delivered to a high standard and in a timely manner.

Resource Development is a department within Operational and Technical Support. To be successful the candidate needs to work closely and personably with many internal and external stakeholders (including Technical Services, Mine Engineering, and Operations), to identify gaps and opportunities in resource understanding, and project delivery.

Reporting to the Senior Geophysicist you will:

  • Be accountable for the timely delivery of high quality and fit for purpose petrophysical data for integration into the geological estimation process.
  • Be responsible for the design and full department-wide stakeholder engagement relating to the collection of key JORC compliant petrophysical data.
  • Ensure robust planning and the safe execution of high quality and fit for purpose surface geophysical programs to enhance Geoscientific, Environmental, Hydrogeological and Geotechnical decision making.
  • Support and pursue innovative process improvements for data collection and processing to ensure optimum delivery of petrophysical and surface geophysical data.
  • Demonstrably use your values of Care, Curiosity, and Courage to provide ongoing personable technical support for stakeholders throughout Rio Tinto and the Resource Development team.

What you will bring

Ideally, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Geoscience or Geodata Science – a practical Honours or above is advantageous, but not a requirement.
  • Excellent engagement skills and ability to build relationships in a collaborative inclusive environment with numerous diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of geoscientific software (preferably ArcGIS, Oasis Montaj, Leapfrog, and acQuire).
  • An understanding of the fundamentals of petrophysical (i.e. density and magnetic susceptibility) and geophysical (i.e. magnetics, gravity, and electromagnetics) data collection, processing, and interpretation practices.
  • Acceptance of the importance of Aboriginal Heritage and the need to ensure our geophysical plans don’t impact these sites is a must.
  • Programming and data science skills with an ability to read/write Python are highly regarded.
  • A ‘C’ class manual driver’s licence is essential.

In addition, the successful candidate will have a passion for continuous improvement, innovation, and technical excellence
