VN 22/03 Copernicus Data Processing Engineer

Within the Data Processing Operations Team of the RSO division, the Copernicus Data Processing Engineer will contribute to the operations build up for the Copernicus Sentinel-4 and Sentinel-5 missions within MTG and EPS-SG, respectively. Furthermore, the Engineer will support the routine operations of the data processing and product extraction systems for EUMETSAT’s MTG and EPS-SG missions and support the evolutions of these systems.

The holder of this post will support 24/7 operations and is therefore required to provide 24 hours a day on-call support including during weekends and public holidays on a regular basis.

Duties

The main duties of the post will be as follows:

· Prepare for the operations of the Copernicus Sentinel-4 & Sentinel-5 missions, including routine operations, operations preparations of recurrent satellites and operations preparation of future satellites;

· Preparing and maintaining the operational documentation (operations ‘how to’ guides, joint operations documents with partners (OICDs), operations procedures for the data processing systems of both MTG-S (Sentinel-4) and EPS-SG (Sentinel-5) missions;

· Support operations preparation and commissioning activities for the Sentinel-4 & Sentinel-5 missions on EUMETSAT’s MTG and EPS-SG missions;

· Coordinate routine and special operations (e.g. during manoeuvres and eclipses) for the data processing and product extraction systems delivering Level 0 – Level 2 products (e.g. trace gases) for the Copernicus Sentinel-4 & Sentinel-5 missions;

· Contribute to the performance monitoring and analysis of Copernicus Sentinel-4 & Sentinel-5 mission data processing services including anomaly investigation and resolution;

· Support the definition and implementation of procedures and tools for the quality monitoring of products, including providing inputs to Key Performance Indicators;

· Support the medium and long term planning of Copernicus Sentinel-4 & Sentinel-5 mission data and product processing operations (e.g. coordinating with other EUMETSAT divisions);

· Contribute to the further development of current and future EUMETSAT Copernicus payload data processing systems including the definition of user-focused improvements and validation of these upgrades, also including product reprocessing campaigns.

Skills and Experience

· Proven experience in the operations of complex data processing and/or product processing systems, and experience of the development, verification and validation of such systems;

· Significant experience in the real or near real-time acquisition and/or processing of data from space-borne sounding and/or imaging instruments, preferably in a complex operational environment;

· Familiarity with UNIX / LINUX;

· Excellent interpersonal, communication skills (both written and verbal) and the ability to work within and between teams, including the ability to synthesise complex technical concepts for presentation to non-experts.

· Experience in the following areas would be an advantage:

· Specification, development, and validation of algorithms for meteorological or other remote sensing missions (e.g. trace gas retrievals);

· C / C++, Oracle and/or scripting languages (i.e. Python, bash, PERL);

· Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) formats.

QUALIFICATIONS

A university degree (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline.

LANGUAGES

The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French.

Employment Conditions

The initial contract will be of 4 years’ duration, with subsequent 5 year contracts being awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of follow-up contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63 and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT.

This post is graded A2/A4 on the EUMETSAT salary scales. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 6421 per month (net of internal tax) which may be negotiable on the basis of skills and experience. The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year.
